WG2020 3

Resumed Session

The International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) emphasized that all goals, targets, and indicators of the Post-2020 global biodiversity framework must uphold the minimum standards as agreed in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The IIFB also calls for enhancing the relational values between peoples and nature and that the implementation of the framework be guided by the human rights-based approach and ensure the protection of defenders of environmental rights and indigenous peoples rights during the resumed sessions of SBSTTA 24, SBI 3 and WG2020-3 held from 13 to 29 March 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Virtual Session

The International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) welcomes the first draft of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework and believes that for it to be successful and inclusive, it is necessary to recognize the lands, territories, and waters of indigenous peoples and local communities as well as respect for their customary sustainable use. The IIFB also welcomes the inclusion of the rights-based approach that can be strengthened through the explicit recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities during the virtual session of the third meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 global biodiversity framework (WG2020-3) held from 23 August to 3 September 2021.

WG2020 2

IIFB Statements

The International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity reminded the Parties that as the original stewards and owners of the lands and waters on this planet, “Cultural intelligence working with nature is the best way forward.” Halting the loss of cultural diversity goes hand in hand with reversing biodiversity loss. IPLCs have continuously promoted a framework with solutions that are guided by evidence in the IPBES global assessment report - specifically the contribution of Indigenous governance to conservation during the second meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 (WG2020-2) Global BIodiversity Framework  held from 24 to 29 February 2020 in Rome, Italy.

IIFB Statements

The International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB) welcomes the wide recognition and overwhelming support from Parties and others, to the importance of IPLCs and traditional knowledge, in the development and implementation of the post-2020 Framework and should be developed from a human rights-based approach, consistent with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples during the first meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework  (WG2020-1) held from 27 to 30 August 2019 held at the United Nations Office in Nairobi, Kenya.
