Advocacy Work

Indigenous peoples face numerous concerns and challenges and is necessary to further advocate their rights and development at the local, national, regional and global levels through their active engagement with the use of existing mechanisms, processes and spaces mandated to promote these rights and development goals.

International Advocacy

To be able to educate and influence the biodiversity-related decisions in different conventions and processes that will be designed and implemented at the country level, Tebtebba representatives and its partners effectively engages in the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), and others.

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)

Tebtebba representatives and its partners are actively engaging in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) processes through the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB), the mechanism by which indigenous representatives are able to participate fully and effectively in the processes in order to advocate for indigenous peoples rights.

Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)

Tebtebba engages in the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) through the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IIFBES), the caucus composed of indigenous peoples and local community participants at IPBES meetings.


National Advocacy

At the national level, the Philippine program is engaged in the following:

  1. Monitoring and influencing law, policies and proposed bills and participate in multi-stakeholder bodies to ensure the protection of indigenous peoples’ rights and knowledge; and

  2. Strengthen the Ugnayang Pambansa para sa Katutubong Kaalaman at Talino (UPAKAT), the national network of indigenous political structure and indigenous peoples organizations for the promotion of traditional knowledge and wisdom.
